Traveling through Turkey - episode 2

Dopo qualche ora, la vita a Istanbul e' sembrata semplice come se fossimo a casa; si', sei continuamente infastidito dai venditori ma impari subito che se non li consideri loro non si offendono affatto, e' solo il loro modo di agganciare i clienti. Cosa diversa se ti fermi, poiche' rischi di non riuscire ad andartene senza aver comprato qualcosa. Le moschee sono divenute tappe di relax nel passeggiare in giro per questa enorme citta', mangiando in posti dove vanno solo i turchi e vivendo il viaggio un po' come se "non stessimo viaggiando", quasi come gente del posto. Talmente semplice, forse un po' rischioso ma molto interessante.

After a few hours life in Istanbul seemed easy as being at home; yes, you are continuously annoyed by sellers but you quickly learn that if you don't care they won't get offended at all, it's just their way to approach clients. Different thing if you stop, you risk not to be able to leave without buying something. Mosques have been a sort of pleasant relaxing stops while walking around this vast city, eating in places where only the turks go and living the trip as sort of "not traveling", but nearly as a local. So easy, somewhat risky but very interesting.

La cosiddetta Yeni Camii, la Moschea Nuova (anche se e' del 1600), ancora piu' luminosa della Moschea Blu, frequentatissima e circondata da piccioni come in piazza San Marco a Venezia. "Venezia mi ricorda istintivamente Istanbul" cantava Franco Battiato. Aveva ragione.

The so told Yeni Camii, the New Mosque (though it was built in 1600), even brighter than the Blue Mosque, well attended and surrounded by pigeons like S.Marco in Venice. "Venice instinctively reminds me of Istanbul" sang Franco Battiato. He was right.

La baia e' un portale verso l'Oriente, e tutte le navi che aspettano il loro turno lo testimoniano. Per avere questa prospettiva occorre entrare nel cortile di una scuola superiore, con un bidello all'ingresso che fa la guardia ma che ci ha lasciati entrare con molta gentilezza. Chiedere porta a dei risultati.

The bay is a gate to the East, and all the ships waiting their turn witness that. To get this perspective you have to enter the yard of a high school, with a caretaker watching the entrance who let us in very kindly. To ask brings results.

Se sei musulmano e devi pregare occorre che tu ti lavi molto bene prima di farlo, ecco perche' nei cortili di ogni moschea ci sono delle fontane. Una buffa usanza in un paese molto arido, ma questa e'.

If you're muslim and you are going to pray you have to wash yourself very well before doing it, that's why in every mosque's yard there are fountains. Funny habit in a very dry country, but that's it.


Questa e' Beyazit Camii, l'unica moschea in cui ho sentito un imam predicare alla gente, e mi e' stato detto che i piu' fedeli vanno proprio li' a pregare. Non siamo neanche entrati visto che era l'ora della preghiera, ma il cortile e' bello e geometricamente piacevole.

This is Beyazit Camii, the only mosque where I could hear an imam preaching to the people, and I was told that the most faithful go there to pray. We neither entered, as it was pray time, but the yard is beautiful and geometrically nice.


Al Gran Bazar mi aspettavo di trovare tutto, certo, ma non un venditore di sanguisughe! Cosa diavolo ci facciano non lo so, ma i salassi nel 2008 mi sembrano un tantino eccessivi...

Nel Gran Bazar potete trovare qualsiasi oggetto inutile riusciate a immaginare. Ecco il venditore di lampade, con l'onnipresente bandiera turca.

Inside the Grand Bazaar you can find every useless thing you could imagine. Here's a lamp seller, with the ubiquitous turkish flag.


E nella piazza di fronte alla Moschea Nuova si vendono direttamente le bandiere, tra i turisti che scattano foto e le ragazzine turche vestite come adulte che aspettano le amiche per fare esattamente quello che fanno le ragazze europee: shopping!

And in the square in front of the New Mosque flags are directly sold among the tourists shooting pictures and some young turkish girls dressed as women and waiting for their friends to come and do exactly what european girls do: shopping!


Non ho visto molte Vespe, ma proprio sotto alla Torre di Galata questa brutta imitazione mi ha fulminato!

I didn't see many Vespas, but right under the Galata Tower this ugly imitation shocked me! (note: in italian "vengo" means "I'm coming"...)


Vi avevo detto che la Turchia e' un paese arido? Beh, non quella settimana. Ha piovuto un casino, un avvenimento davvero eccezionale. Fortunati, eh?

Il viaggio n Corsica ci fece conoscere la Corsica Cola, questa volta e' stato il turno della Cola Turka che non abbiamo assaggiato. Il nostro fegato stava gia' urlando abbastanza!

Traveling through Turkey - episode 1

Viaggiando in Turchia potreste meravigliarvi nello scoprire cose che non avreste sospettato, come i cessi alla turca sui treni o il fatto che i Turchi non bevano tanto caffe' quanto ettolitri di te'. Potreste fare la conoscenza di Ozcan, detto Paco, cameriere attore e bugiardo cronico, oppure di Orlando, gioielliere di Manhattan con grossi baffi bianchi e una spillina con la testa del presidente turco sul bavero della giacca. Potreste mangiare per pochi spiccioli dei panini con la sardina arrostita direttamente in barca sulle rive del Corno d'Oro oppure ingozzarvi di stucchevolissima Baklava. Potreste rimanere, come e' successo a me, in bilico tra lo stupefatto ed il disgustato, tra il disorientato e il dolcemente affascinato. Ma alla fine del viaggio comprenderete quasi certamente che la Turchia non e' ne' Asia ne' Europa, e' solo una nazione sospesa tra due continenti, con un asimmetrico e sbilanciato perno su quello che resta di Bisanzio, caotica citta' del mondo antico cosi' simile alla nostra moderna complessita'.

Traveling trhrough Turkey you might be astonished by discovering things you never suspected, like squat toilets above trains or the fact that the Turks don't drink much coffee but gallons of tea. You could meet Ozcan, nicknamed Paco, waiter and cronical liar, or Orlando, jeweller in Manhattan with big white moustaches and a pin sowing the head of the Turkish president on the lapel of his jacket. You could eat for pennies a sandwich with grilled sardines, cooked right above a boat on the docks of the Golden Horn, or get stuffed with nauseatingly sweet Baklavas. You could end up, just lik me, in the balance between dazzled and disgusted, between disoriented and sweetly fascinated. But at the end of your trip you'll almost surely learn that Turkey ain't Asia neither Europe, it's just a nation suspended among two continents, with an asymmetrical unbalanced pivot on what remains of Byzanthium, chaotic city of the ancient world so similar to our modern complexity.

Sirkeci e' la stazione sul lato europeo. In realta' si tratta della storica stazione dell'Orient Express, un posto magico in cui gli spostamenti quitidiani incrociano quelle linee misteriose tracciate da un treno affascinante. Niente in confronto all'Ankara Ekspresi e al bizzarro Meram Ekspresi su cui avremmo dovuto viaggiare di li' a pochi giorni.

Sirkeci is the european side railway station. This is actually the historical Orient Express station, a magic place where everyday routes cross those mystery lines traced by a fascinating train. Nothing compared to the Ankara Ekspresi and the bizarre Meram Ekspresi we were due to travel upon in a few days.

Il ponte di Galata attraversa il Corno d'Oro; lungo il ponte decine di pescatori passano la giornata e qualcuno, in pieno stile turco, vende sul marciapiede l'attrezzatura completa da pesca e le esche. Non portate la vostra, sarebbe tempo sprecato.

The Galata bridge crosses the Golden Horn; along the bridge dozens of fishermen spend their day and someone, in perfect turkish style, sells on the sidewalk a complete fishing set and baits as well. Don't bring yours, it would be a waste of time.

La Cisterna Basilica: una spettacolare riserva sotterranea d'acqua per i periodi asciutti. Peccato che abbiamo trovato una settimana d'acqua...

Dentro Aya Sofia le luci giocano un ruolo importante nel costruire l'atmosfera. qualcosa che ho conosciuto all'inizio del mio corso di studi in architettura si e' trasformato in un posto bellissimo. Le cose sui libri sono pallose, muovete il culo e andate a vederle!

Sultanahmet, The Blue Mosque. A true marvel.

Dentro la Moschea Blu. Era la prima volta che entravo in una moschea. Con senso di meraviglia mi sono sentito incredibilmente a mio agio, come entrare nella propria camera. La luce riempie l'interno, puoi sdraiarti sui tappeti e godertela liberamente, nessuno verra' a dirti di spostarti; prova a farlo in una chiesa cattolica. Sono deliziato dall'esperienza, e nella nostra settimana abbiamo visitato molte moschee, ognuna diversa ma tutte con lo stesso senso di pace.

Inside the Blue Mosque. This was the very first time I entered a mosque. With sense of marvel I felt incredibly at ease, just like entering your own bedroom. Light fills the inside, you can lay on the carpets and enjoy it freely, none will come and tell you to move; try to do that in a catholic church. I was delighted by the experience, and in our week we visited many mosques each one different but all of them with the same sense of peace.
